Ensiling of fibrous residue left after protein extraction from lucerne showed a rapid drop in pH from 5.6 to 4.6 during silage fermentation. Addition of sugarcane tops to fibrous residue increased the level of water soluble reducing sugars in the mixture and improved fermentation characteristics showing more rapid drop in pH to 3.8.
