The medicinal uses in West Africa, particularly Nigeria, are discussed for C. ferruginea. Leaf analyses showed the presence of glycosidic anthraquinones, sterols, tannins and flavonoids but not alkaloids or saponins. The aqueous and methanolic extracts showed marked antimicrobial activity. The petroleum ether extract, which had no activity, contained squalene as the major component (40%), myricyl alcohol, beta -sitosterol and a higher homologue of methyl linolenate.
