A study was initiated in 1982 to evaluate the effectiveness of several pre-em. herbicides acting alone or in combination for the control of several weed spp. in fallowed sugarcane fields. Herbicides were applied broadcast at 187 l/ha on 2 June to reestablished weed-free beds. Extensive tillage after sugarcane harvest in autumn 1981 and again in early spring destroyed most of the rhizomes of Johnson grass which was prevalent in the previous crop.
