Congenital hyperplastic goitre in calves of a dairy herd

Congenital hyperplastic goitre in calves of a dairy herd

Medecin Veterinaire du Quebec 12(4): 103-106

In an outbreak of congenital goitre in a dairy herd in Quebec in 1979, goitre was obvious in calves at birth, and in two calves which died the thyroid weighed up to 30 times normal. Body temperatures were normal and there was no diarrhoea, but growth was slow. Administration of an organic iodine compound for 3 weeks caused the goitres to disappear. The cows had not received their normal supplement of iodized salt, their diet was poor and iodophor teat dips had not been used.
