Effect of Toxorhynchites brevipalpis on Aedes aegypti (Diptera: Culicidae) in continuous-breeding laboratory populations

Experimental continuous-breeding populations of Toxorhynchites brevipalpis Theo. and Aedes aegypti (L.) were established in caged piles of 6 water-filled vehicle tyres, simulating tyre dumps, in the laboratory in Indiana, using numbers of larvae comparable to those found in the field at the beginning of the breeding season. In the 1st cage, where only A. aegypti was present, the population continued for 31 weeks and attained a peak of 27 000 larvae. In the 2nd cage, where only A. aegypti was present but the tyre habitat was made more complex by the insertion of plastic lattice-work baskets round the inner circumference of each tyre, the Aedes population attained a maximum density of 50 000 larvae/tyre and fluctuated until the baskets were removed after 34 weeks. In the 3rd cage, which had no baskets but into which adults of T. brevipalpis were released, A. aegypti continued for 16 weeks and reached a population peak of 10 000 larvae. In the 4th and 5th cages, which had both T. brevipalpis and plastic baskets, the Aedes populations attained a maximum density of 20 000 larvae/tyre and disappeared after 11 weeks. It is recommended that predation by T. brevipalpis should be further investigated in the field as a biological alternative to chemical treatment.
