Potatoes were given ammonium sulphate at 400 mg N/pot applied by mixing in 0-10, 10-20 or 20-30 cm soil layers, in bands or on the whole area at depths of 10, 20 or 30 cm. N applied in bands or onto the whole area at a depth of 10 cm gave the highest tuber yields. Assimilation of fertilizer N by plants decreased with increases in the depth of its application. The fertilizer N balance in the soil-plant system is given.
