Effect of soil moisture depletion, water-use efficiency and quality of maize-cowpea and bajra-cowpea forages

Mixtures of cowpea HFC 42-1 with either maize Sanya-101 or bajra (Pennisetum americanum) PHB-14 were grown during 1977 and given 0, 40, 80 or 120 kg N/ha and 3 moisture regimes based on the ratio of 7-cm depth of irrigation water and cumulative pan evaporation. All crops received a basal dose of 40 kg P2O5/ha and were harvested in July. Max. water utilization at all 3 irrigation levels was from the 30-cm soil layer.
