In 2 experiments 6 groups of 14 Black Pied bull calves were given complete pelleted mixed feeds with roughage 30 (experiment 1) or 70% (experiment 2) to appetite or 15% less from 150 to 490 kg. Crude protein in feeds was 13, 13.5 or 14% or, in 1 sub-group in each experiment, 11% from 250 to 490 kg. Increasing roughage from 30 to 70% decreased digestibility of nutrients, except crude fibre and increased intake of DM. Mean daily gain was greatest, 900 to 1000 g, and utilization of energy and protein best in calves given pelleted feeds with 70% roughage to appetite.
