Estimation of losses caused by major pests in main and ratoon crops of sorghum

Field trials were carried out in Maharashtra, India, between 1976 and 1980 to estimate the losses caused by the major insect pests of sorghum (Atherigona soccata Rond., Chilo partellus (Swinh.) and Contarinia sorghicola (Coq.)) to the main (kharif) and ratoon (rabi) crops, in plots treated against the pests and in untreated plots. A. soccata caused substantial losses of grain and fodder in unprotected plots, particularly in the ratoon crop.
