High potential for breast feeding among mothers giving birth to pre-term infants

High potential for breast feeding among mothers giving birth to pre-term infants

Acta Paediatrica Scandinavica 71(4): 661-662

A questionnaire was completed by 100 mothers of premature infants admitted to a neonatal unit and 108 mothers of term infants all born in 1978-80 in Norway. Of the premature infants 61% were breast fed wholly or partly for 3 months, 45% for 6 months and 21% for 9 months; corresponding proportions of term infants were 83%, 59% and 38%. Duration of breast feeding was significantly longer for the mothers of term infants than in studies in 1976 and 1977.
