High protein oats grain for lactating dairy cows and growing calves

High protein oats grain for lactating dairy cows and growing calves

Journal of Animal Science 55(5): 1200-1205

Oats high in protein (17.6% crude protein) were compared with normal oats (14.5% crude protein) and maize as grain ingredients given to 30 lactating Holstein-Friesian cows and 48 calves. Regular oats and maize diets were made isonitrogenous with the high-protein oats diet by addition of soyabean meal. During a 16-week lactation trial, 10 cows were given each of the 3 concentrate mixes at 1 kg/3 kg milk produced, 2.5 kg lucerne-bromegrass hay and maize silage freely.
