High-fibre diet in the treatment of the irritable bowel syndrome. A controlled clinical investigation

High-fibre diet in the treatment of the irritable bowel syndrome. A controlled clinical investigation

Ugeskrift for Laeger 144(33): 2415-2417

In a controlled trial, 60 outpatients with irritable bowel syndrome were divided into a control group given routine instruction and treatment by the physician and a treatment group instructed, in addition, by clinical dietitians and told to incorporate as much high fibre nourishment as possible into their daily food. After 12 weeks, 82% of the control group and 74% of the treatment group reported subjective improvement. However, that difference was not significant.
