High-frequency somatic embryogenesis from Carica suspension cultures

Excised ovules of C. papaya pollinated with C. cauliflora were cultured on modified Murashige and Skoog (MS) medium. Polyembryony was induced 30-140 days after pollination in ovules from hermaphrodite trees with pyriform fruits and dioecious, oblong-fruited types far more readily than in those from hermaphroditic, oblong-fruited and dioecious, round-fruited types.
