High-iodine endemic goiter

Chinese Medical Journal 95(9): 692-696

Near the coast of Huanghua County, Hebei Province, China, in 6 villages where since 1965 the drinking water had come from deep wells of 600 to 700 m with an iodine content 24.3 times higher than in shallow wells, of 4344 persons examined, 317 had goitre and 1232 had enlarged thyroid; 19 had goitre larger than Grade II and none had Grade III; 17 goitres were of the nodular type. Goitres were smaller and firmer than ordinary endemic goitre.
