Higher yields with row placement of nitrogen

Betodlaren 46(1): 24-26

In field trials in 1981-2 at Trolleberg and Adelholm, Sweden, sugarbeet was given 0, 100 or 140 kg N/ha broadcast on the soil or placed level with the seed at 6 or 12 cm distance or 5 or 10 cm below the seed at these distances. Plant density was 49 000-72 000/ha. Root yields increased from 37.5 t/ha with no N to 57.0 t with 100 kg N/ha placed below the seed. This was 5.7 t higher than broadcast application of 100 kg N/ha and 2.35 t higher than broadcasting 140 kg N/ha.
