The ice cream plant of Giant Food Inc., Jessup, Maryland built at a cost of $14 million, has an annual capacity of about 53 million l ice cream, and also incorporates a 12 060 m2 frozen food distribution centre. It uses 3 programmable controllers, slaved to a microcomputer, to control all processing functions; in addition, all in-place cleaning sequencing is provided by the controllers with the valve cycling function being performed by the microcomputer.
