Histological observations of the hepatopancreas in juvenile lobsters subjected to dietary stress

Histological observations of the hepatopancreas in juvenile lobsters subjected to dietary stress

Proceedings of the World Mariculture Society 11: 471-478

The hepatopancreas of the American lobster (Homarus americanus) was evaluated as a potential indicator organ for early dietary stress. Seventy-five 7th stage lobsters were divided into 3 groups and fed on live brine shrimp (Artemia salina), an inadequate artificial diet (M4) or starved. Lobsters from each group were killed on days 2, 4, 8, 12, 16, 22 and 29. A general atrophy of the absorptive and secretory cells in the hepatopancreas of the starved lobsters was noticed as early as 4 days.
