Histological studies on breaking resistance of lower internodes in rice culm. III. Morphology of the breaking parts and a dynamic consideration of the breaking

Japanese Journal of Crop Science 52(1): 94-101

The external breaking forms of elongated internodes in rice culms were observed and classified as broken, split and separated types. Broken types were most frequent in lower internodes. Breaking began in the epidermis and cortical fibres and extended to the parenchyma. In fold parts of broken type failures, the cortical fibre cells were bent and longitudinally divided but were not cut off transversely.
