Histological studies on the host-pathogen relationship in the course of poplar leaf infection by Melampsora larici-populina Kleb

Histological studies on the host-pathogen relationship in the course of poplar leaf infection by Melampsora larici-populina Kleb

Arboretum Kornickie 26: 51-99

Urediospore germination and germ tube development on leaves depended on varietal resistance. Fungal growth in the mesophyll of resistant poplars could be halted at various stages of development by a chemical factor and was accompanied by necrotic reactions of guard and mesophyll cells. Cell reactions before or shortly after formation of the first haustoria largely determined prevention of a eusymbiotic equilibrium between host and pathogen.
