Histopathological and experimental infection studies on Pleistophora ganapatii (Kalavati) a microsporidian parasite of Odontotermes horni (Desn.)

In the gut of O. horni infected with P. ganapatii, the epithelial cells were hypertrophied, the cytoplasm was highly vacuolated and the nuclear membrane was disrupted. Heavily infected cells ruptured, releasing spores into the gut lumen which became blocked in the region of the Malpighian tubules. Monthly collections of O. horni (total 6060) from Waltair, Andhra Pradesh, India, showed that the highest infection rate (20%) occurred in December and the lowest (0%) in June and July.
