Honeycomb selection and independent culling levels selection in autotetraploid winter rye

Selection for reduced height combined with improved yield was practised on an unselected autotetraploid population of 4470 plants. For the honeycomb method (H), plants yielding more than each of their six neighbours and having a culm length less than the mean culm length of these neighbours were selected. A total of 76 plants satisfied these criteria and the same number were selected using independent culling levels (ICL). The means of ICL plants were better than those of H.
