Hormonal modulation of mineral metabolism in reproduction

Proceedings of the Nutrition Society 42(2): 169-180

Mechanisms whereby mothers effect appropriate alternations in calcium (Ca) fluxes to respond to increased Ca needs during pregnancy and lactation are outlined, and factors (hormonal and otherwise) that contribute to these processes are identified. Pregnancy and, especially, lactation present considerable Ca stresses on maternal homeostatic mechanims. One hypothesis presented indicates that Ca demand in such instances is largely settled in 4 ways: facultative reduction in urinary Ca excretion; increased food intake; intestinal hypertrophy and mucosal area increase; and facultative increase in intestinal Ca absorption (consequent to elevated 1,25-dihydroxy vitamin D3).
