Hormonal response of human breast tissue in organ culture

Normal mammary gland explants from 12 women undergoing surgery for benign lesions were cultured in medium 199 for 1 h without or for 5 days with added hormones (insulin (I) at 5 mg/l and cortisol (F) at 1 mg/l, alone or with oestradiol (OE) at 50 mg/ml and/or progesterone (PRG) at 1 mg/l). At 1 h prior to termination of culture, hymidine was added.
