Hormonally induced changes in the lactational performance and blood components of dairy cows

Groups of 6 cows were left untreated or given (per cow) intramuscular injections of desoxycorticosterone trimethylacetate at 150-200 mg, corticotrophin A (ACTH) at 200 or 400 IU, 9 alpha -fluoro-16 alpha -methylprednisolone (PRED) at 10 mg without or with thyroxine (T4) at 1-2 mg/100 kg body wt., or 5 mg PRED + T4, 17-beta-oestradiol at 2-16 mg/100 kg, or at 16 mg/100 kg with T4 at 2-4 mg/100 kg, oestradiol-17-phenylpropionate + oestradiol benzoate (4:1, DIMP) at 8 mg/100 kg, or at 8 or 4 mg/100 kg with T4 at 2-4 mg/100 mg, or T4 at 1-4 mg/100 kg. Milk yield was decreased by 10 mg PRED + T4 and increased by 8 mg DIMP + T4, FCM yield was increased by 4 mg DIMP + T4, fat content was increased by ACTH at 400 IU, 10 mg PRED, 5 mg PRED + T4, 8 mg DIMP + T4 and 4 mg DIMP + T4, and protein content was increased by 4 mg DIMP + T4. Thus, T4 alleviated decreases in milk yield and milk fat and protein synthesis due to PRED and DIMP, and increased glucogenic effects of glucocorticoids. Effects on plasma mineral contents were also studied.
