Horses

Horses

Livestock production in Europe Perspectives and prospects: 217-234

The horse population in Europe has decreased steadily since the early 1950s due to the rapid mechanization of farms. The rate of decline has been less rapid in the USSR and Eastern Europe which still have a reservoir of work horses. Numbers of work horses will probably not increase again in countries that have mechanized their agriculture although the high cost of energy may slow the rate of decline in their use in Eastern Europe.
