Host selection by the white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi Peck: feeding bioassays using host and nonhost plants

Host selection by the white pine weevil, Pissodes strobi Peck: feeding bioassays using host and nonhost plants

Canadian Journal of Forest Research 12(1): 64-70

In the laboratory in British Columbia, 33 species of native and exotic conifers (in 7 genera), a fern and 5 broad-leaved trees and shrubs were tested in single-stimulus bioassays to determine the presence or absence of chemical feeding stimulants for adults of Pissodes strobi (Peck), a pest of Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis) in the Pacific north-west of North America. Feeding stimulants were present in nearly all the conifers tested and absent in the non-conifers.
