The capacity of French hotels fell 5.6% in the period 1976-81; the number of rooms in small hotels has fallen 25%, and this has only partially been offset by increased accommodation in classified hotels. The availability of 1 star accommodation is stagnant, that of 2 star accommodation is increasing because of interest by hotel chains. Many rural family hotels are poorly adapted to their markets (lack of comfort, location, size, etc.).
