How LOCAS beats manual control

A description is given of LOCAS, the computerized Laser Optimiser and Cant Alignment System developed by Princes Risborough Laboratory. Three laser scanner heads are spaced around the log on a twin wide bandmill. As the log moves forward it is scanned along its length. A record of the log's shape is stored in a computer and the optimum conversion parameters are determined for each cant; each cant can then be positioned automatically when it reaches the next saw.
