How to determine hardwood/softwood proportions of wood chip blends

A chip staining method based on the Maule reaction is described which has been used to quantify the hardwood/softwood content of chip mixtures. Chips are exposed to 1% aqueous potassium permanganate for 10 min and rinsed, 6 N hydrochloric acid for 1 min and rinsed, and 10% ammonium hydroxide for 1 min. After drying and separation, the percentage of the red-stained hardwood chips and the yellow- or brown-stained softwood chips can be calculated by weight.
