Human blastomycosis from dog bites

Human blastomycosis from dog bites

Annals of Internal Medicine 98(6): 1030-1030

Blastomyces dermatitidis was cultured from lung tissue and was histopathologically demonstrable as numerous broad-based budding yeasts in bronchial air spaces at autopsy in a dog which died following development of blastomycosis while receiving steroid therapy. The authors suggest that this case supports previous theories that transmission of B. dermatitidis from animal to humans occurs via infected sputum (RMVM 9, 1557; 18, 1190, 1192).
