Human opisthorchiasis in the Turgai basin, on the route of the Ob-Amudarya Canal



Meditsinskaya Parazitologiya i Parazitarnye Bolezni 60(6): 29-31



In 1979, 7 villages situated on the river Turgai and the town of Arkalyk (at 100 km from the river), Kazakhstan, USSR, were investigated for opisthorchiasis. The prevalence of infection averaged 15% for the villages (594 inhabitants were examined) and 4% (of 192) for the town. All of 5 cats autopsied were found infected and Opisthorchis ova were recovered in soil samples of 3 of the villages and in river silt.
