Investigation of pruning techniques by means of sawmill studies where pruned logs were sawn and the produce assessed has resulted in the development of a 'grade index' formula for predicting the value of straight, pruned butt logs. The index is closely correlated with the value per m3 log vol. of sawn timber and can also be used to predict the proportions of New Zealand Standard Grades. A method of predicting the largest diam. over pruned branch stubs (DOS) has now also been developed.
