Limitations on the purchase of agricultural land and their effect on land prices. An empirical research into the effectiveness of the criteria proposed in a new land transfer law in the Netherlands

European Review of Agricultural Economics 9(4): 467-477

The strict regulation of land prices introduced into the Netherlands during wartime occupation was maintained until 1963. The selling price of land was based on the main criterion that it should enable small or medium sized farms to be run at a profit. The system broke down in the late 1950s with actual land prices two or three times above the official level and the market was freed in 1963. Prices rose steadily in succeeding years, particularly in 1974-1980 (400%).
