Microscopic method for estimating the number of fruit buds in apple cultivars in October/November

Stereomicroscopy was used for estimating expected fruit bud numbers in the spring with samples taken from 11 cvs grown in 3 localities. Relationships between the number of fruit buds, number of fruits/tree, yield/tree and mean fruit weight were studied by regression analyses. The results showed that 30-35% fruit buds out of the total number of buds on 1-, 2- or 3-year-old shoot terminals were adequate for optimal fruit yields, provided no severe winter injury occurred.
