Milk yield and calving interval in Holstein-Friesian X Gir cows at a high level of management

For 55 Holstein-Friesian (HF), thirty-five 7/8 HF-1/8 Gir, and fifty-three 3/4 HF-1/4 Gir cows in Brazil, lactation length averaged 318 plus or minus 18, 301 plus or minus 15 and 305 plus or minus 14 days resp., lactation milk yield 4149 plus or minus 318, 3894 plus or minus 263 and 4034 plus or minus 252 kg, calving interval 433 plus or minus 23, 431 plus or minus 19 and 406 plus or minus 19 days, and milk yield per day of calving interval 9.9 plus or minus 0.8, 9.4 plus or minus 0.6 and 10.1 plus or minus 0.6 kg. Neither genotype nor parity had a significant effect on any of the traits investigated, but year and season of calving had a significant effect on calving interval and milk yield per day of calving interval, and there was a significant genotype X parity interaction for milk yield. For 55 Holstein-Friesians (HF) and 35 and 53 HF/Gir crossbreds with 7/8 and superscript 3/4 HF breeding resp. (94, 59 and 82 lactations resp.) on a private farm least squares means were for lactation length 318 +or- 18, 301 +or- 15 and 305 +or- 14 days, lactation milk yield 4149 +or- 318, 3894 +or- 263 and 4034 +or- 252 kg, and calving interval (CI) 433 +or- 23, 431 +or- 19 and 406 +or- 19 days. CI and yield/day of CI were significantly affected by year and season of calving, and milk yield was affected by breed group x parity. Correlations for milk yield with lactation length, CI and milk yield/day of CI, 0.63, 0.26 and 0.75 resp., were all significant.
