During experiments carried out in 1980 in forest stands in the German Federal Republic consisting mainly of spruce 4 types of pheromone traps (1 flight barrier and 3 perforated cylinders) baited with Pheroprax (a dispenser containing a mixture of (S)-cis-verbenol ((1S-(1 alpha ,2 beta ,5 alpha ))-4,6,6-trimethylbicycloept-3-en-2-ol) + 2-methyl-3-buten-2-ol + ipsdienol (2-methyl-6-methylene-2,7-octadien-4-ol)) and lineatin (3,3,7-trimethyl-4,9-dioxatricyclowere tested for their effectiveness in capturing adults of Ips typographus (L.) and Xyloterus lineatus (Ol.) (Trypodendron lineatum), respectively. The flight-barrier (funnel) trap was most effective in capturing both species. In addition, pheromone-baited flight barriers and perforated cylinders were much more effective in trapping X. lineatus than insecticide-treated logs baited with lineatin. However, the trapping devices could not completely protect neighbouring trees from attack. Treatment with oleic acid did not repel X. lineatus, 1 of 3 test logs being attacked within 4 days of treatment. The combination of Pheroprax and lineatin in the same trap resulted in the capture of comparable numbers of X. lineatus to those caught in traps baited with lineatin only, while catches of I. typographus were reduced by 50% in comparison with traps baited with Pheroprax only.
