The Salado River Basin in the Buenos Aires province is a flat area of c. 6 million ha, mostly (a) native grassland and (b) some cultivated pasture. Factors affecting the choice between (a) and (b) for animal production including environmental heterogeneity, ranch size, owner's objectives, technological potential, national policy and energy subsidies for systems ranging from traditional to highly intensive production are analysed.
