Naturally occurring cicatrices of Glossina morsitans centralis (Diptera: Glossinidae)

, : Naturally occurring cicatrices of Glossina morsitans centralis (Diptera: Glossinidae). Zeitschrift fuer Angewandte Zoologie, 693: 299-307

The incidence of 'black spots' on adults of Glossina morsitans centralis Machado in a population in Zambia is described. It is suggested that these are cicatrices, and laboratory-derived evidence is presented in support of this view. Causes of the cicatrices are thought to be unsuccessful predation, accidents (such as caused by bush fires or wind) and mating. The incidence was higher in females than males and increased with age, rising to almost 50% in females more than 40 days old.
