Within the framework of a total metabolism trial the effects of a 15% reduction in energy supply by decreasing concentrate intake for 4 wk followed by a 3-wk realimentation with slight oversupply was studied using 4 pairs of monozygotic twins. Digestibilities of fibre and crude protein were increased by energy restriction. N excretion in faeces decreased but urinary excretion was considerably increased; N secretion in milk was significantly decreased (P < 0.01).
