Oviposition preference of the rice weevil, Sitophilus zeamais Motschulsky (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) , for unpolished and polished rice

The results are given of studies in Japan on the oviposition preferences of Sitophilus oryzae (L.) among rice grains at different stages of the milling process. The order of decreasing preference was parboiled-unpolished rice > unpolished rice > parboiled-polished rice > polished rice. The degree of preference decreased as the milling intensity increased. The females tended to oviposit on a particular area of the grain (especially the embryo).
