Production in the laboratory of apothecia of Sclerotinia trifoliorum Eriks. for the evaluation of resistance of red clover to Sclerotinia disease

Sclerotia were produced on 1-month-old cultures, desiccated for 1 month at room temp. and frozen for 24 h at -18 deg C. When covered with moist vermiculite they produced apothecia in 1 month at 15 deg under fluorescent light (18 W/m2) with a light period of 12 h/24. Apothecial production continued for at least 2 months, at the rate of 2000-3000/10 000 sclerotia, each apothecium yielding on av. 30 000 ascospores.
