Pseudophyllidea in the South of Chile. IX. Types of plerocercoids in trouts from five lakes and new cases of Diphyllobothrium latum in man and D. pacificum in a dog

International Journal of Zoonoses 10(1): 15-21

Plerocercoids of Diphyllobothrium were found in 39 of 50 Salmo gairdneri from 5 lakes in southern Chile. Of the 460 plerocercoids recovered, 87.2% were D. dendriticum and the rest D. latum. The latter species predominated at Rinihue and Panguipulli lakes where human cases of diphyllobothriasis have occurred. 2 people with Diphyllobothrium eggs in their faeces passed tapeworms corresponding to D. latum after treatment with niclosamide.
