Reactivation of phloem export in mature maize leaves after a dark period

Reactivation of phloem export in mature maize leaves after a dark period

Planta 155(5): 444-448

Mature leaves of maize plants which were darkened for 48 h contained neither bundle-sheath starch nor glucose and their sucrose content was <5 mu M. In such leaves phloem export had ceased. When re-illuminated, photosynthetic sucrose production started without delay, but the sucrose:glucose ratio was 1.25:1. Most of the newly-formed sugar was utilized locally.
