Trials were conducted in 1971-9 at Szarvas, Hungary, using sugarbeet Beta poly M-102. Plants were grown in lysimeters, containing 1 m deep soil sections. Natural precipitation was excluded by temporary covers and 16 levels of water supply were given. Evaporation was measured from a separate container and lost water replaced to each treatment at weekly intervals. Fertilizers were applied uniformly, at the rate of 200 kg N, 200 kg K2O and 100 kg P205/ha.
