A 9-week switchback trial with 12 students failed to show that sour cream buttermilk (given at 1.5 l/day) decreased plasma cholesterol more effectively than cultured skim milk, as reported in Lancet (1980) 1, 602 There were large intraindividual variations in plasma cholesterol.
