Studies for improving the feed value of the solid components of the manure of fattening pigs by alkaline treatment, and the use of the treated solids in feeding fattening cattle

Studies for improving the feed value of the solid components of the manure of fattening pigs by alkaline treatment, and the use of the treated solids in feeding fattening cattle

Archiv fur Tierernahrung 31(11/12): 825-833

The pressed solid components of manure of fattening pigs were treated with NaOH. Treatment increased DM digestibility in vitro by as much as 23.7 percentage units. KOH in the same molar concentration acted similarly. Treatment had no detrimental effect on feed intake. Fattening bulls ate 45-70% more DM of solids treated with 5% NaOH than untreated solids. In a pair-fed study with 16 bulls given 67% solids mixed with concentrates, treatment with 5% NaOH increased liveweight by 277 g daily.
