Studies on a method of breeding inbred lines of maize (Zea mays L.) 1. The effect of visual selection on combining ability in early inbred generations

Forty three lines of maize were selected visually three or four times for vigour, ear morphology and freedom from diseases, insects and lodging. The lines belonged to the following groups: six S3 lines from open-pollinated Shionomata 1 (group A), 11 S3 lines from the double-cross hybrid Souyaku 808 (group B) and 26 S2 lines from the synthetic BS5 (group C). Combining abilities of the selected lines and their original populations were compared in crosses using two single-cross testers.
