The responses of 4 old and 4 new improved rice to N fertilizer were compared. Photosynthetic activity/unit leaf area was increased more in improved than old by N fertilizer; differences were greatest during ripening. Photosynthesis was greater in new than old cv., especially in plants with high leaf N contents.
