Local subsidence of the surface in Estonian cities is due to consolidation of shallow, primarily clay, Quaternary deposits, mainly resulting from an artificial reduction of the hydraulic head in the underlying aquifers and the weight of buildings supported. Calculations show that subsidence in Tallin due to a decrease of head in the Cambrian-Wendian water-bearing complex will decrease from 6-8 mm in 1980 to 2 mm in the year 2000.
