Clinical and bacteriological diagnosis of atrophic rhinitis was carried out on 150 farms during the autumn and winter of 1979. Clinical disease was diagnosed in 20.2% of 9217 piglets in 113 herds. Satisfactory specimens for bacteriological examination were obtained from only 2110 piglets on 111 farms, material from the rest showed extensive contamination with coliforms. Pig breeds involved were Landrace, Large White, Duroc, Hampshire and crosses of Landrace/Large White.
